There are concerts that go down in history. There are also films through which subsequent generations can feel their atmosphere. During the November meeting of DKF REWERS we invite you to “Monterey Pop” — a documentary that will take us to California in 1967, in the middle of musical and moral changes.
Our guest will be Piotr Metz — music journalist, radio broadcaster and popularizer of rock history. It is an opportunity to combine the screening with a conversation about the artists who changed the music, and about the festival, whose legend remains alive to this day.

About the event

There are concerts that go down in history. There are also films through which subsequent generations can feel their atmosphere. During the November meeting of DKF REWERS we invite you to “Monterey Pop” — a documentary that will take us to California in 1967, in the middle of musical and moral changes.
Our guest will be Piotr Metz — music journalist, radio broadcaster and popularizer of rock history. It is an opportunity to combine the screening with a conversation about the artists who changed the music, and about the festival, whose legend remains alive to this day.

MONTEREY — BEFORE THERE WAS WOODSTOCK
From June 16 to 18, 1967, performers representing rock, folk, blues, soul and Indian music met in Monterey. The festival became one of the highlights of the “summer of love”, and its significance went far beyond the stage. Music accompanied the birth of new attitudes, the search for freedom and the building of the community of the younger generation.
For many artists, Monterey was a watershed. Janis Joplin wowed the audience with her voice and uncompromising expression, Jimi Hendrix showed completely new possibilities of the guitar, and Otis Redding captivated festival listeners with the power of soul. The event helped shape the idea of a grand music festival that Woodstock developed two years later.

A FILM THAT PRESERVED THE ENERGY OF THOSE DAYS
D.A. Pennebaker, one of the most important creators of the musical documentary, recorded both the performances and the faces of the listeners, gestures, glances and life outside the stage. His camera allows us to look at how the agreement between the artist and the audience is born.
The film features Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin of Big Brother and the Holding Company, Otis Redding, The Who, Simon & Garfunkel, The Mamas & the Papas, Jefferson Airplane and Ravi Shankara.
Hendrix's famous guitar setting, the stage element of The Who, the poignant singing of Joplin and the focus that accompanies Shankara's music create a story of variety, courage and the power of live performance. Viewed today, they also allow us to see how much in contemporary music culture we owe to that era.
The film will be presented in a restored 4K version, with a renewed soundtrack.

OUR GUEST — PIOTR METZ
Piotr Metz has been bringing music and its creators closer to listeners for more than four decades. He first became involved with Radio Three in 1982. He is one of the co-founders of RMF FM, where he served as music director from 1990 to 2001. He was also the editor-in-chief of the magazine “Machina”, worked at Radiostacja and MTV Polska.
Listeners know him, among others, from the programs “Personal List” and “Rock'n'Roll — Universal History”. In his programs, he combines musical discoveries with interviews and stories about the history of recordings. He is a fan of The Beatles, a record collector and the holder of a postcard from John Lennon.
The meeting with Piotr Metz will be an opportunity to look at “Monterey Pop” from a broader perspective: to talk about the importance of the festival, the phenomenon of its performers and why performances from almost sixty years ago still evoke emotions.
We invite regular participants of DKF REVERSE, music lovers and all those who want to discover this film for the first time. It is worth seeing it on the big screen - and talking together about what is left of the dreams, energy and freedom of the “summer of love”.

The activity of the REWERS Discussion Film Club is co-financed by the Polish Film Institute from the funds of the Culture Promotion Fund.
