Somewhere in the south of Morocco, in the middle of mountains and deserts, there is a rave. The bass is carried through the harsh landscape, the crowd dances, and Luis and his son Esteban circulate among the people. They didn't come here for the music. They're looking for Mar, a daughter and sister who went missing a few months earlier during one of these events.

When they learn of another rave organized somewhere deep in the desert, they set off on a journey with a group of people they met. With each kilometer, they leave behind more and more of what is known and safe.

The title sirât, in the Islamic tradition, is a bridge leading over hell to paradise — thin as a hair and sharp as a sword. For Oliver Laxe, it becomes a metaphor for the road where one uncertain step can change everything.

“Sirât” begins as a story about the search for a missing girl, but quickly escapes simple definitions. It is the cinema of the road, an almost physical experience, a story of loss, the limits of endurance and people who move on, although they do not know what awaits behind the next bend.

The desert, the dust, the monumental landscape and the pulsating electronic music of Kangding Ray create a world that is felt rather than watched. Oliver Laxe does not lead the viewer by the hand. He tells him to enter his sirât.

The film was honored with the Jury Prize at the 78th Cannes International Film Festival and received two Oscar nominations — for Best International Film and Best Sound.
