The iconic Dutch classic, directed by George Sluizer, which Stanley Kubrick called “the scariest movie he's ever seen.” The low-budget hit of European cinema is a dark, psychological puzzle and a dense nightmare in waking life, compared to such works as “The Silence of the Sheep” or “Funny Games”.
During a holiday trip in France, a young Dutchwoman Saskia disappears without a trace at a gas station. Her partner Rex spends the following years obsessively searching for the truth, while the viewer watches the kidnapper from the beginning - an inconspicuous chemistry teacher. A journey into the unknown leads to a harrowing question: how high a price can be paid to know the truth?
The adaptation of Tim Krabbé's novel impresses with its narrative precision, philosophical flair and a terrifying portrait of an unscrupulous psychopath, played out in sunny outdoors and bourgeois interiors.
