To the Heart of Tango (Flying Into Daylight) by British playwright Ron Hutchinson is an intimate play for two actors about feelings, desire, escapism and the possibility of radically changing their own destiny. In this adage, the path leading to such a goal is tango, because - as one of the characters says - “tango is life, tango is the answer to everything”. The play premiered in November 2014 at the Live Theatre in Newcastle upon Tyne, and the author was inspired by the story of Victoria Fischer and her personal experiences of traveling to Buenos Aires and learning tango.

The main character is Virginia, a young British woman who is torn from a seemingly safe but monotonous and gray life in London by a brutal diagnosis of cancer. After defeating cancer, he decides to stop putting his life off for later and spontaneously sets off on a trip to distant Buenos Aires to learn Argentine tango. There she meets Mark, a charismatic and direct teacher of dance, who introduces her not only to the secrets of tango, but also to a completely different way of experiencing the world. Tango becomes for Virginia a metaphor for risk, closeness, sensuality and self-discovery.

Ron Hutchinson's play poses to the viewer the question of whether it is better to stay within the safe framework of a familiar, though perhaps banal, life, or to take a chance and follow an impulse that can completely change them. In this sense, however, it is not a story so much about tango as about what tango unleashes in a person. Dance and music are not just a complement to the performance — they form the basis of dramaturgy, the language with which the characters express what they cannot or do not want to say in words.

Virginia's journey from England to Argentina eventually becomes a journey into the self. The heroine discovers that closeness, sensitivity, suffering and heartbreak are inherent elements of a fully lived life. That in order to really taste it, sometimes you have to dare to go beyond the familiar and safe — and let someone lead us in an unknown direction.

The Polish premiere of this title on the intimate Nova Scena of the ROMA Music Theatre will take place on 21 November 2026. The main roles will be played by Anna Ibersze and Tomasz Borkowski. The director is Anna Wieczur, the text is translated by Michał Wojnarowski, and the musical direction is carried out by Piotr Kopietz, who is also the author of the musical arrangements.
