About the event

Domology: “eko” (Greek oikos) means “house”

We invite you to a week of ecological activities in our five branches — the House in the Aleje, the Artistic Workshops, the Rotating House of Culture in Jazdow, the Intergenerational Club Café and the Stage in Smolna.

The nest flagellation workshop consists of two meetings — gathering materials in the field and weaving. During each of them, the practical part will be interspersed with a discussion around various cultural texts: from Gaston Bachelard's philosophical treatise on the nest to the English fairy tale about magpies, which taught other birds the difficult art of making nests.

October 3 (Saturday), 14:00-16:00 — walk on the Most Farm
Meeting point: 14:00, entrance to the Most farm, 2 Gwintowa Street, Warsaw

10 October (Saturday), 17:00-19:00 — workshops
Workshop venue: DKŚ Artistic Workshops, 11 Foksal Street, 4th floor

About the workshop:

Could a bird construct a nest without instinctive trust in the world?
Gaston Bachelard, The Poetics of Space

Do you remember that feeling when you discovered a bird's nest somewhere in the thickets? Maybe, when you were little, or maybe just recently?

These intricately woven, small structures are touching for a reason. On an area of a few centimeters, the idea of homeliness is fully expressed. Everything in the nest tells us about diligence, mustiness, padding, warming and limping. It quickly transports us to some mythical era of childhood, of security, of being enveloped and swaddled.

How much does this symbolic image have to do with the actual functions of the nest in the bird world? What can we learn by observing bird practices and construction methods?

On October 3, we will meet at the city farm Most to observe, experiment and obtain materials. Each of the participants will look around for raw materials, studying their properties, texture, durability, heat. aesthetics.

And a week later, on October 10, we will meet in the Artistic Studios on Foksal 11 and we will move on to the essential phase — to the vice. The construction base will be wicker, and the recommended knitting method — random weaving. Everyone will be able to decide on their construction, what materials they want to use to create their nest. And so, while plotting, we will try to talk about what elements each of us needs in order to build a structure a little larger in scale. What is the most important thing for us to feel at home in an inhabited space?

Conversations and flagellation will be accompanied by a warming tea and a set of nutritious grains.

About the host:
Marta Basak — born 1993, graphic designer, illustrator and cultural animator sharing life between Poland and France.
When drawing, he often observes nature with great sensitivity. In her animation activities, she is interested in creating a delicate, ephemeral community and warmth, through simple, collective actions. She organized, among other things, the Apple Festival at the Yazdow Estate in 2014, Farewell to the Femina Cinema, a joint reading of the Moomins in the Solatorium. She participated in the exhibition New Spirituality. On mysticism from nature in the Rotational House of Culture in 2021, during which she also led workshops on “eating cherries” around the book Cracks of Existence by Jolanta Brach-Czaina.
He often changes places of residence, reviewing himself in the surrounding reality and rewinding subsequent nests. From this personal experience of a nomadic lifestyle and constant circulation around the definition of home, the idea for this workshop was born.
