Three sisters

In the world of the three sisters, time passes between remoteness from reality and longing for a glorified past. They dream of their childhood when their father, the general, was still alive and Europe still seemed okay. Olga, the eldest, sacrifices herself — with a constant headache — for her job as a teacher, Masha, who is married, longs for a more passionate love and throws herself into an affair and Irina, the youngest, believes that only work is the key to a better life, but prefers to sleep half of the day.

But the decadence of middle-class boredom can quickly be caught up with social reality: Director Mateja Koležnik places Chekhov's pre-revolutionary scenario right in the middle of the military compound, which only plays a role in the background in the play. The dead general's three daughters live on the upper floor of this military complex, lively war strategies are being planned around them, they no longer have privacy and birch forests only exist in photographs. When, despite all the will to suppress, the parallel world can no longer be sustained, Moscow becomes the destination of the necessary escape; it is no longer a place of longing for.

Mateja Koležnik is one of Slovenia's most renowned directors. With psychological precision and atmospheric acuity, she tells of cracks between people's outer and inner lives. She regularly stages at the Burgtheater Wien and the Berliner Ensemble. In 2023, she was invited to the Berliner Theatertreffen with her Bochum production “Kinder der Sonne”.
