Tablecloth you, fool

Leone's least known film is, at the same time, one of his most entertaining. Sean (James Coburn) is a lapsed, slightly drunk Irish terrorist who has come to Mexico to join the revolutionary struggle. Here he is forced into a collaboration with Mexican gang leader Juan (Rod Steiger) - an illiterate with a big heart - who has dreamed since childhood of robbing the bank in Mesa Verde. Instead, Juan involuntarily becomes a hero of the revolution when he releases a group of political prisoners. 'Duk Thee, Fool' is a distinctive blend of western, comedy and political revolution film, but the style elements are familiar: the ultra-contemporary imagery, the impressive mass performances, the black humour and Ennio Morricone's underpinning music.
