A star soloist, a cherished concerto and Brahms at his most warmly expansive make this an irresistible symphonic evening.
Sol Gabetta, one the Philharmonia’s Featured Artists, joins the orchestra for Dvořák’s Cello Concerto, a work that combines Bohemian warmth, with thrilling virtuosity in one of the great showpieces of the repertory. A previous performance of Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1 with the Philharmonia was praised by Bachtrack as “a compelling account shot through with playfulness and poetic rhapsodising… technically formidable”, and this return promises the same distinctive personality and flair.
Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture sets the scene before Brahms’s Symphony No. 2 brings the evening to a close. Sunlit in atmosphere yet rich in inner strength, it unfolds with generosity, tenderness and majestic momentum. Together, Dvořák and Brahms offer music of songful expression, radiant orchestral colour and deep emotional satisfaction.
