“Conductor” — new music by Michał Pepol for Andrzej Wajda's film
On October 8, the Marenie cinema in Tarnów will take place the second screening, after the Warsaw premiere, of the author's project “Conductor” by Michał Pepol, prepared on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Andrzej Wajda. The project is implemented as part of the concert series “Art Full of Energy”.
Acclaimed cellist and composer Michał Pepol took on a unique artistic challenge — he created a completely new, original music for one of Andrzej Wajda's most famous films, “The Conductor” from 1979 — a story about human passion, obsession and the price of art.
The new soundtrack was composed as a kind of dialogue with Ludwig van Beethoven's Fifth Symphony present in the film. Pepol, combining classical sensibility with modern musical language, has created a parallel sound story that subtly comments on the film's narrative, enriches it and opens it up to new interpretations. The composition was created from attentive listening to the image we know, but at the same time from the courage to give it a new meaning. It is an invitation to hear “The Conductor” anew — as if we were looking at well-known cadres for the first time.
The music is performed live during the screening of the film, creating a unique combination of concert and cinema — a kind of cinema-concert spectacle in which contemporary music meets the classic work of Polish cinematography.
Ash & The People:
Michał Pepola's music is performed by “Pepol & The People” - the latest artistic initiative of the cellist and composer. It is a young and unconventional formation composed of the most outstanding students and graduates of the Karol Szymanowski Music School Ensemble No. 4 in Warsaw.
The band was formed in 2025 and operates in a variable line-up from string quartet to string orchestra. Its artistic director, Michał Pepol, leads the formation both as a conductor and a cellist in the quartet.
“Pepol & The People” has already participated in session recordings, among others for Ralph Kaminski and Stas Kukulski, winner of the Opole Debut. The band is also developing its own ambitious concert projects.
The first performance of the ensemble was the ceremonial “Birthday of Kora”, which took place on June 8, 2026 at the Nowy Teatr in Warsaw.
During the Tarnów show “The Conductor” the formation will be led by Michał Pepol. The lineup will include:
Karolina Wiśniewska — 1st violin, Mikołaj Marciniak — 2nd violin, Michał Moiraliotis — viola.
Second screening after the premiere
The Polish premiere of the “Conductor” project took place on 12 September 2026 at the Iluzjon Cinema in Warsaw, in cooperation with the National Film Archive — Audiovisual Institute and the Documentary and Feature Film Studio.
Tarnów's screening at the Marenie cinema on 8 October will be the second screening of the project after its Warsaw premiere. It will be a unique opportunity to see Andrzej Wajda's film in a new musical shot by Michał Pepol — with original music performed live by “Pepol & The People”.
