Bezrobocie, imprezy i kac wyznaczają rytm kolejnych tygodni. Góry, łupkowe hałdy, opustoszałe lokale i ślady dawnego przemysłu nie tworzą tu malowniczego tła – opowiadają historię pracy, klasy i ekonomicznego porzucenia. W centrum filmu pozosta
About the event
EN EFFI O BLAENAU is a Welsh-language portrait of a young woman who, with determination and spirit, seeks ways to survive. Effi lives in Blaenau Ffestiniog – a former centre of the slate industry in North Wales, now marked by its decline. Unemployment, parties and hangovers set the rhythm of her weeks. A chance encounter with a soldier named Lee briefly brings the promise of something different into her everyday life. But reality soon reasserts itself: it is hard to escape the circumstances that have shaped you, and in Effi’s world hope rarely comes without complications. Marc Evans brings Gary Owen’s acclaimed monodrama Iphigenia in Splott to the screen, retaining its blend of Greek tragedy and British social realism while relocating the story and rooting it firmly in North Wales. The mountains, slate tips, shuttered venues and remnants of former industry are more than picturesque scenery; they tell a story of labour, class and economic abandonment. Leisa Gwenllian remains at the heart of the film. Her portrayal of Effi has become one of the film’s most critically acclaimed aspects. The protagonist is at once feisty, impulsive, funny and vulnerable. Behind Effi’s anger and apparent indifference, a complex female experience of life in poverty gradually emerges, revealing the clash between the individual and a failing system, and the struggle for personal agency. The film has also proved a landmark for Welsh cinema. It recorded the biggest UK opening for a Welsh-language film before going on to overtake the previous box-office record holder. That success carries particular weight in a country where Welsh-language feature films made for cinemas remain relatively rare, with home-grown work in the language having developed primarily through television for many years. EFFI O BLAENAU draws on a very specific place, language and social experience, but is not confined to a local context. The themes it explores resonate just as strongly outside Wales.
