“A life for freedom and democracy” — 100 years of Mikis Theodorakis

Born in Greece, Vasiliki Roussi became an audience favorite thanks to her impressive interpretations of Edith Piaf. In her new stage program, she is now reviving the remarkable stages of her compatriot Mikis Theodorakis.

The composer, writer and politician, who was born on the island of Chios on July 29, 1925, studied music in Athens and Paris and achieved international fame for his film music, including Alexis Sorbas. In Greece, he is loved for his folk songs, with texts by great Greek poets including Odysseas Elytis, Yiannis Ritsos, Georgios Seferis. During the Second World War, he was a resistance fighter against the National Socialists and was later interned and tortured in the Greek Civil War. In the 1960s, he was elected to the Greek Parliament, but was arrested again after the military coup of 1967. Due to international pressure, he was allowed to travel to Paris in exile and returned to Greece in 1974. There he was actively involved in Greek politics and was re-elected to parliament. In the 1990s, he was minister without portfolio and worked for culture, education and the improvement of relations between Greece and Turkey.

Vasiliki Roussi is now interpreting this impressive life as part of this concert. It is the artist's personal view — sensitively, musically and with stories of important moments from the lives of Theodorakis and his companions. She will be accompanied this evening by her wonderful musicians Harry Ermer (piano/arranger), Dragan Radosavljević (violin, mandolin), Yusuf Topcu (percussion) and one of Greece's best bouzouki players Dimitris Psarras.

An evening full of great emotions in one of Berlin's most beautiful theaters.
