Silent Green & Verlag Klaus Wagenbach present
Unicorns? Unicorns! Hardly any other phenomenon makes it so easy to understand the history of the Internet over the last 20 years: from queer open spaces and start-up culture to the right “vibe shift.”
How did a mythical creature become an icon of the digital present and a projection surface for culturally conservative fears?
In her brilliant essay on the rise and crisis of social media, Annekathrin Kohout makes her way to Candy Mountain, explores the colorful Internet culture of millennials and the unicorn as a consumer phenomenon with Erasure soundtrack — and ends up in Silicon Valley, where investors are looking for the next multi-billion dollar “unicorn start-up.”
The evening will be hosted by Boussa Thiam.
Annekathrin Kohout has a doctorate in cultural studies and is a freelance author. She is co-editor of the book series Digitale Bildkulturen published by Wagenbach Verlag and the magazine POP. Culture and criticism. She writes a column about Internet culture for the taz. She has recently published books on net feminism, hyperreactivity, nerds and K-pop.
