Christopher Nolan's Odyssey is not only the most high-profile film event of 2026, it is also a strong testament to the astonishing vitality of Homer's epic and the tale of Odysseus the wanderer itself.
The lecture will be an attempt to reach the sources of permanence of this story in three dimensions. First, the starting point will be a reflection on the nature of the mythical story itself and, above all, on its ability to say the most about the times in which it is told each time. Secondly, from this point of view, we will look at the history of the screen adaptations of The Odyssey, and thirdly, finally — we will return to Nolan, showing that this perhaps the greatest of modern film directors filmed the epic almost by the will of fate. For although it was his first Odyssey, it was not at all his first Odyssey.
