Elio Rojas & Beny Luis

Cuban artists Elio Rojas and Beny Luis reunite to revive El Cuartel, a musical project first imagined during their early years in Cuba. Piano & Trova is an intimate journey through the Cuban songbook, combining traditional trova, Cuban filin and timeless music associated with Buena Vista Social Club, Beny Moré, Ernesto Lecuona, Pérez Prado, Celia Cruz and Pablo Milanés.

With original arrangements influenced by jazz, classical music, pop and flamenco, Elio and Beny bring a fresh perspective to the music of their homeland, accompanied by Frank Portuondo and Ernesto Marichales, outstanding musicians from London’s Latin jazz scene.

Piano & Trova brings together Cuban pianist, arranger and musical director Elio Rojas and vocalist Beny Luis for an intimate celebration of Cuban music and friendship.

Elio and Beny first met during their early years as musicians in Cuba, where they shared the idea of creating a project called El Cuartel: a space where they could explore the songs and musical traditions that shaped them as artists. After developing international careers and performing on stages in London and beyond, they now reunite to bring that original idea to life.

The show journeys through traditional Cuban trova, Cuban filin, bolero and canción, alongside music associated with legendary artists and groups such as Buena Vista Social Club, Beny Moré, Ernesto Lecuona, Pérez Prado, Celia Cruz and Pablo Milanés. Rather than simply recreating familiar versions, the quartet presents the repertoire through original arrangements that blend the richness of Cuban tradition with elements of jazz, classical music, pop and flamenco.

At the heart of the performance is the musical conversation between Elio’s expressive piano playing and Beny’s warm, distinctive voice. They are accompanied by bassist Frank Portuondo and percussionist Ernesto Marichales, two accomplished musicians from London’s Latin jazz scene who bring authenticity, energy and rhythmic depth to the ensemble.

Piano & Trova is both a tribute to Cuba’s extraordinary musical heritage and a personal story of two friends reconnecting through the music they have carried with them throughout their lives. Audiences can expect a warm and engaging evening filled with virtuosity, improvisation, storytelling, nostalgia and unmistakable Cuban soul.
