What happens when Poland ceases to be a country of emigration and becomes a country of return?
“E: /migrants” is a perverse sequel to Sławomir Mrozek's cult drama. This time we are not observing Poles fleeing to America, but the grandchildren of those emigrants who end up in a mobile assimilation capsule. One came from Chicago. The other — from Grodno. They are both Poles. Both are trying to prove that they have the right to stay here.
New Poland no longer resembles the country from the dramas of Mrozek. It's not the poor East dreaming of the West. It is the center of the world to which the descendants of former emigrants, refugees, exiles and those who once had to leave for bread return.
The capsule to which they end up becomes at the same time: a micro-dwelling, a border, an assimilation center, a workplace, a church, a livestream studio and the last form of community. In the world of permanent relocation and digital surveillance, the characters learn a new Polish: how to talk, how to sleep, how to work, how to love, how to pass the exam of being “at home”.
“E: /migrants” is a story about Europe after the solstice. About loneliness. The Economics of Fear.
The New Religion of the Internet. And about a society that, trying to protect its own paradise, begins to build its regulations.
Is it possible to build a common paradise in a world based on others' fear, fatigue and flight?
