A fistful of dollars

The first part of Leone's famous' dollar 'trilogy, which also includes 'Revenge for Dollars' and 'The Good, the Bad and the Cruel', is based on Akira Kurosawa's samurai classic' Yojimbo '— and in fact sparked a lawsuit by the production company behind the film, which claimed it was outright plagiarism. But the film stands fine by itself today.

With poncho, crooked eyes and smoking cigar, Clint Eastwood takes on his iconic role as the man with no name who draws his gun before he speaks. He arrives in a patch of desert near the Mexican border and soon becomes embroiled in a bloody clash between two rival families. In reality, however, he only sticks with himself. Ennio Morricone's innovative underlay music and the distinctive ultranar imagery show that the genre had already found its shape with this early spaghetti western.
