53,000 Danes redeemed cinema tickets for 'A Summer in La Goulette' — a unique ticket sale for a Tunisian film. The unexpected success was deserved: the film proved in one fell swoop that Southern European cinema had no patent for sweet and sensual Mediterranean charm, and that films about the interweaving of religions need not be heavily moralising. The year is 1967. In the sun-drenched port city of La Goulette, residents are more concerned with food and drink, sun and siesta than in the troubles of the Middle East, which were soon to separate Jews and Arabs around the world. The young men chase the girls, while the parental generation rejoices at the fine visitation of the movie diva above them all: Claudia Cardinale. We show the film on 35mm copy with Danish subtitles.
