Director: Stan Brakhage|USA|1961-1964
“Dog Star Man” is a monumental film series by Brakhage, made between 1961 and 1964, consisting of a prelude and four parts. The starting point is a simple figure of a man traversing the winter landscape, but through intensive editing, superimposition of images and abrupt changes of scale, the film transforms it into a visual poem about body, nature, birth, effort and cosmic order. Deprived of the soundtrack, “Dog Star Man” does not conduct a linear narrative, but confronts the viewer with the image as a direct perceptual experience.
The session is accompanied by an audiovisual performance “consequences of seeing”. Mariusz Knysak watches the film in a VR environment, isolated from the space of the event and the resulting live sound. The recorded signals of brain activity together with other biological signals become important factors influencing the sound production by Maciej Ożog's modular synthesizer. At the same time, Marcin Polak develops an autonomous sound layer, using cymbals excited by electromagnetic strings. The music does not illustrate the film and does not obey its structure. It arises as a result of the meeting of Brakhage's image of the viewer's physiology, technology and two independent improvisational practices. Each performance starts with the same film, but leads to a different visual-sound event
