The first part of the concert will take the listeners into the world of Zygmunt Krauz's music. Try to sing a mutilated world is a moving poem by Adam Zagajewski. It is also the title of a new work by Zygmunt Krauz, the premiere of which we will hear during the concert. The composer follows Zagajewski's poem, and his text in the solo soprano part plays a leading role in the work.
The inspiration for the Second Piano Concerto (1996) is the sacred places visited by the composer, which had a great influence on him: the Greek Delphi (the center of the cult of Apollo), the Mexican Teotihuacán (sacred city of the Aztecs), the Korean Gyeongju (the cradle of Buddhism there) and Jerusalem. The work does not use elements of the traditional music of the aforementioned cultures, but each of its parts is an artistic reflection of the experiences of the creator after visiting these places. The virtuoso part of the piano will be performed by the composer himself.
The evening will close with Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 4 (1900), which stands out from his other works with a smaller performance apparatus and is often considered one of this composer's more accessible symphonies. Is this really the case? Perhaps the idyllic finale, in which the soprano solo performs a children's song about heavenly delights, in conjunction with the theme of danse macabre from Part II, is a means to achieve the grotesque effect, where death appears as a constant, ironic element of life, and the sonic “approachability” of the work hides a dragonfly and difficult theme?
