Evita

In the mid-70s, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, who are also behind musical successes such as Phantom of the Opera, Cats and Jesus Christ Superstar, set the lyrics and melody to the tale of the woman who both shared the waters and gained god-status in post-war Argentina. And in the half-century that followed, the musical traveled from the West End across Broadway to theaters of all over the world, with a flood of accolades, Tony Awards and millions of tickets sold in its wake.

Now Evita gets air under the wings of the Opera's Store Stage in a brand new Danish translation. Eva Perón's life was a fairytale worthy of a musical. She used her youth and beauty for social ascendancy, achieved political influence as a presidential lady, died at just 33 -- and became an icon for large sections of the population. She was a symbol of the working class at the same time that she was known as a cynical and powerful seducer of the people.

The Royal Theatre and Opera utilise the impressive setting of the Big Stage with a large ensemble of outstanding musical performers backed by the Royal Chapel. The title role of Evita, who sings Don't cry for me Argentina from the balcony of the presidential palace in one of the most iconic moments in musical history, is shared by Sara Viktoria Bjerregaard and Cecilie Stenspil. The former could in 2025 be experienced as Satine in Moulin Rouge, while the latter is known from numerous films and the television series Badehotellet. Behind them are stage designer Niclas Bendixen, set designer Benjamin la Cour, lighting designer Ulrik Gad, choreographer Signe Fabricius and designer Anja Vang Kragh ready to lift Evita to new heights and lead it into the proud musical tradition at the Opera's Store Stage.

One icon — multiple faces

In November and December, when we play Evita on the Opera's Grand Stage, we will also be laying the floor for one of the most legendary leading roles in history. Elaine Paige and Madonna made the story of Eva Perón's life immortal in Hollywood and the West End, and now Sara Viktoria Bjerregaard and Cecilie Stenspil are following in the footsteps of the two icons as they share the musical brilliance of the former Argentine First Lady between them. If you redeem tickets for the performances on Saturdays at 12 noon, you should, on the other hand, look forward to seeing Linda Arunee Drenck, who played Maria in West Side Story, take on the role.
