Across the trilogy, the artist reimagines critical alternatives to colonial and imperialist storytelling in early 20th-century British and Hollywood studio films.
Williams Gamaker's latest, Strange Evidence, focuses on the 1930s Hollywood star and Academy Award nominee Merle Oberon, who kept her mixed Sri Lankan, Indian and British heritage secret to protect her industry status. Through what Williams Gamaker calls Fictional Healing, the film offers a speculative exploration of Oberon's self-censorship, examining the racial stigma, trauma and industry pressures that shaped her choices.
This film completes the filmmaker's Critical Affection Trilogy (2021–2026), following The Bang Straws (2021) and Thieves (2023).
