Minnesota. Jerry, a car salesman, wants to become independent and get money, so he orders the kidnapping of his own wife to extort a ransom from his rich father-in-law. The “perfect crime” quickly turns into bloody chaos, and the investigation is led by pregnant policewoman Marge. The cult film of the Coen brothers - black humor, white exteriors and crime that gets out of hand.

Jerry (William H. Macy), a Minnesota car salesman, is drowning in debt and comes up with a “brilliant” plan: hire two thugs, kidnap his own wife, and extort a ransom from a wealthy father-in-law. It was supposed to be fast, quiet and without casualties.

Of course, everything gets out of hand, and the case turns into a series of fateful decisions and increasing chaos. The investigation is led by Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand), a local police chief in advanced pregnancy, with a cup of coffee in her hand and a calm that contrasts with the growing panic of criminals.
