Deep underground, out of place and out of time, the trapped miners face disaster, but above all, each other. Walk up to the glass pane and see them up close — like exotic animals locked in a damp, misty terrarium. What do you read from their fossilized bodies? What emotions are hidden by faces disappearing into the darkness? Words in nerves thrown into space repeatedly bounce off the walls. Silence rumbles, carrying a dark murmur across the underworld. Do not be afraid, the tablet will not crack. You're safe.

About the event

Deep underground, out of place and out of time, the trapped miners face disaster, but above all, each other. Walk up to the glass pane and see them up close — like exotic animals locked in a damp, misty terrarium. What do you read from their fossilized bodies? What emotions are hidden by faces disappearing into the darkness? Words in nerves thrown into space repeatedly bounce off the walls. Silence rumbles, carrying a dark murmur across the underworld. Do not be afraid, the tablet will not crack. You're safe.

The play “Faterland” is not a story about a disaster in a mine. It is a story of isolation, powerlessness and the limits of humanity. It's an installation, a living ecosystem, a garden in a jar that shows what follows a devastating attack by nature and what life looks like for those trapped — an hour, a day or a week after it. It is a story about what happens to people in the most claustrophobic and extreme conditions; what happens when, for an indefinite period of time, you are condemned to the company of colleagues. But also about the unobvious aspects of this situation — the relationships, bonds, friendships and rivalries that are inherent in one of the most masculine professions in the world. Who are these non-acquaintances in this non-world? Will they stay together for a while or forever?

The play based on the drama “The Land of Our Fathers” (orig. “Land of Our Fathers”) by Chris Urch, translated by Elżbieta Woźniak, was created on the premises of the Silesian Museum, the former Katowice mine — where miners worked for more than 200 years.

Due to the unique play space and the nature of the show, the number of seats is limited. The show “Faterland” is worth watching from different perspectives — we encourage you to move freely around the Carpentry.

Attention! Pulsating light and loud music are used in the performance.

The partner of the show is the Silesian Museumopens in a new window.
