Opera in 5 acts. Performance performed in French with subtitles in Polish.
The opera “Faust” is a fairy tale for adults, full of magic and metaphysics, in which the existential dilemma of the main character is presented against the background of a story about a wartime society, which, despite historical circumstances, still wants to play, love and seeks support and an ethical compass in simple interpretations of folk morality and religious dogmas. Our interpretation of “Faust” is based on the ambition to make a fable and a Faustic myth fit for our times. We offer you a journey into the world of dystopia, the world of futuristic fantasy about the society of the future - a fairytale convention, but through the social bitter observation it contains, intended for the adult viewer. Based on the observation of the modern world: the ongoing war outside our borders, the climate crises, the progressive re-militarization of societies and their polarization, we tell the story of a new order, the society of the late 1930s, which, after experiencing the devastating armed military conflicts of the earth, unites in tightly codified, controlled communities and tries to cope with the available, methods, with the horror of the surrounding world. The main character, Faust is a doctor-pathologist dealing with the victims of war, for the sake of his work immersed in great doubt about the nature of man, the meaning of his own work, overwhelmed by the magnitude of the catastrophe that he sees in the world. The experience of magical transformation and the journey in which he searches for Margaret is a kind of Volterian initiation journey, where the hero during the journey discovers truths about the nature of the world. Margaret, in turn, the actual heroine of the drama that takes place in the opera, is portrayed by us in the scenery of her garden, which we have made one of the most important symbols of the play. In the minimalist garden of Margaret there is probably the last tree on Earth — the apple tree — a symbol of temptation by Satan, but also of Margaret's purity, her naturalness of simplicity and innocence. After Faust abandons her, the bare tree becomes covered with snow, and in the end...
Ewa Rucińska, the director of the play, writes about the idea for the realization of the opera, how this story will end, we will not tell you. We invite you to the performances, it is worth seeing the new installment of “Faust”, the musical direction is carried out by Rafał Janiak.
