The monumental Ciaccona (or Chaconne) from the 2nd Partita in D minor for violin solo by Johann Sebastian Bach, a series of variations built on a simple harmonic structure, has gained a reputation as one of the masterpieces of humanity. Johannes Brahms wrote to Clara Schumann: “On a small instrument this man writes down a whole world of the deepest thoughts and the most powerful feelings.” In 2011, a series of Frises (Friezes) by Kaiji Saariaho was commissioned by violinist Richard Schmoucler. The great composer begins it with sound, with which Ciaccona ends, creating a contemporary commentary enriched with electronics. Eugene Ysaÿe's Sonatas for Solo Violin are a twentieth-century answer to the entire cycle of Bach sonatas and partites. During the concert we will see how the new work of the outstanding Swedish composer Anders Hillborg will fit into this collection.
