Songs from the Baroque period are like modern songs — they have a simple structure and catchy melodies. Many of them tell in a specific convention about the sufferings of love, like the famous Si dolce è il tormento by Claudio Monteverdi or Se muove by Francesca Caccini. Today it is increasingly said that the only collection of works by this court composer Medici Il primo libro delle musiche is a kind of musical and poetic autobiography. The stories of Caccini and Barbara Strozzi are great examples of the victorious struggle of female artists for recognition in a society that is not favorable to independent women.
In addition to Italian music, we will also listen to songs from England (Henry Purcell) and Spain (Juan Hidalgo). In each of these countries, the song had its own local specificity. I wonder how the new song of the Catalan singer and composer Anna Campmana will fit into this program!
