We don't often have the opportunity to listen to the cello alone. In chamber music, like other instruments, he usually performs with the piano or in larger ensembles. Meanwhile, the solo repertoire for this instrument has a centuries-old tradition — not even dating back to the time of its illustrious predecessor, the viola da gamba, it suffices to recall the brilliant Johann Sebastian Bach Suites proving that sometimes the cello alone is quite enough.
In the program of Petar Pejčić's performance, old compositions enter into dialogue with newer ones, with the outstanding Sonata by György Ligeti at the forefront. Especially for the young Serbian cellist, the Đuro Živkovic Icon was created, inspired by the vision of the Byzantine mystic Saint Simeon the New Theologian. The religious theme can also be found in the music of Ernest Bloch, and the contemporary virtuosity will be provided by the compositions of Ana Sokolović and Giovanni Sollima.
