The performance “Leprosy, because unloved” is very closely linked to the mission of the Lena Grochowska Foundation. The ToMy theatre group was created on the initiative of the Foundation's employees, who recognized that theatre can be a way for people with intellectual disabilities to express themselves, break down social barriers and build relationships with the environment. In the play itself, the central theme is rejection, loneliness and the need for acceptance. The director of the play is Aneta Karczmarska, who believes that people who often experience stereotypes or social exclusion themselves can convey this story particularly authentically.
Interestingly, the actors are not professional artists. On a daily basis, they work in the foundation — among others in the ceramic studio and the ToMy café. The theater was to become another space for development and an opportunity to “tell your own story” to the audience.
Participation in a theater group is an extremely developing experience for actors — people with intellectual disabilities. Theater helps them build self-confidence, teaches cooperation, responsibility and communication with others. It develops memory, concentration and the ability to express emotions and own thoughts. Performances in front of the audience allow you to break through fear and shyness, as well as give a sense of agency, success and belonging to the team. For many participants, it is a space where they can discover their talents, develop creativity and build a positive self-image.
The performance “Leprosy, because unloved” will be a moving journey, for which we invite you to the House of Culture in Piaseczno.
