Guru-shisha is a model of teacher-student relationship in Indian culture, setting the standard in education for hundreds of years. It is based on closeness, but also respect for hierarchy. The teacher here is not so much a partner as a superior, whose position is not questioned, the guardian of the social and academic order — conservative, devoid of individuality, full of suspicion of students' ideas, such as planting trees along railway tracks, when the examination committee expects the classic design of a public utility building. The protagonist of Pradip Krishen, Anand “Annie” Grover, is unable to adapt to the prevailing rules and for the fifth time repeats the last year of his studies, because he puts his own ideals higher than a diploma.

The eternal student prefers trees and constantly challenges the academic staff, which is encouraged by his equally rebellious colleagues of the year. They are creative, impatient, idealistic — they dream of improving the world and breaking the system.

In the colorful, satirical, pulsing psychedelic music of the 1970s, the story echoes the conflict between individuality and institutional conformity. The screenwriter of the film is Indian writer Arundhati Roy, later author of “God of Small Things”. (Blanka K. Jugai)
