When the great solar archer Hou Yi, who set out to save the fading Sun, disappears during his mission, the fairy Chang Er follows in the footsteps of his beloved. Dying of longing, she is ready to reach the dark side of the moon to save him. She will be helped by an earthly astronaut, whose unexpected presence will introduce a bit of absurdity into the plot. “House at the End of the Moon”, a science fiction film inspired by Chinese mythology, is a cosmic fairy tale that draws on the classic poetics of stories of great feelings, destiny and matters beyond human measure.

Nelson Yeo shows a love for genre eclecticism, post-apocalyptic aura and nostalgia for Hong Kong cinema of the 90s. Melancholy here is adjacent to nonsense, sublimity with comedy touches, romanticism with the severity of the VHS image. This cinema is both archaic and futuristic — as if an ancient Chinese legend had been found in a distant galaxy. The latest film by Nelson Yeo, director of the unpredictable adult fairy tale “I leave, and you dream” (17th Five Flavors), premiered in the main competition of the Locarno Festival. (Lukasz Mankowski)
