RETROSPECTIVE: TSUI HARK
In 1913, China finds itself in a state of chaos — with weak central power, corrupt generals vying for influence. One night in Beijing's historic turmoil, the paths of three different women cross. One of them follows a box of valuables, the second dreams of an acting career in the opera, the third has a dangerous mission to complete. Will they manage to survive when bullets fly in the air, and each person they meet may turn out to be a traitor?
“Peking Duck” is a cinematic candy, a show of the director's control over the seeming chaos of events unfolding at a frantic pace, a mix of tropes and genres — from slapstick comedy, to rogue spy film, to historical drama. With this film, Tsui Hark pays tribute to Chinese opera and female heroines, inviting three great heroines of Hong Kong cinema — Cherie Chung, Sally Yeh and the masculine Brigitte Lin. After years, there is no doubt why it is “Peking Duck” that is considered the peak achievement in the director's filmography.
