In the sleepy village of Gokseong in the Korean province, a series of mysterious murders take place, and its inhabitants begin to suffer from a strange disease that leads to insanity. Police officer Jong-goo begins an investigation - his daughter has similar symptoms. The lead leads to a mysterious Japanese, whose presence causes a collective fever in the village. Faced with the growing threat, the locals turn to the shaman for help. This is just the starting point in the plot of one of the most terrifying occult horror films in the history of cinema — unquestionably the most accomplished work in Na Hong-jin's work.

The Korean director weaves crime fiction, shamanic horror and religious parable, consistently leading viewers by the nose in a story about fear, faith and the nature of evil. He constantly raises the stakes, reverses the perspective, spreads further doubts and undermines the moral order of the world depicted. Collective paranoia turns out to be one of the strongest sources of anxiety in his film. A decade after the realization of “Lamentation”, it is worth looking at it through the prism of spirituality: involving a bodily shell, rooted in many belief systems, which often brings even more questions instead of answers. (Lukasz Mankowski)
