Yuta leaves Tokyo and travels to a small town on Kyushu to help her mother-in-law, a photographer who runs a traditional studio, who is recovering from an accident. He stays there for longer, away from his wife and daughter, adjusting to the rhythm of local life, which flows differently — more slowly, surrounded by silence punctuated by casual encounters and casual conversations. After a while, he finds his own place in it. He communicates with Yuta's family through photos and short recordings transmitted by his smartphone, creating a peculiar mosaic of everyday life and longing.
Miiku Sakanishi's intimate debut is a film filled with breath and calm. However, it is not just a laudatory for the Japanese province, where everything seems to be slowing down — it is a subtle story about the building of closeness born of attention given to another person. Sakanishi openly admits his inspiration from Edward Yang's film — like Taiwan's Yi Yi, Memorizu proves that memory is not about great events, but about what sometimes escapes the human eye: trifles, glances, irrepressible presences, everything that can one day remain only in photography.
