In the “Interworld” death is not the end, but the beginning of the long road to the next incarnation. In the afterlife inhabited by soul guardians, the dead must free themselves from memories and grief in order to be reborn again. It is here that one of their guides, Gudo, meets Yuri — a girl looking for her younger brother. Yuri is unable to come to terms with the loss, and the grief that overflows her quickly turns into immeasurable anger. When her obsession begins to threaten her overall balance, Gudo decides to embark on a millennial journey by her side on the road to redemption, helping her find peace.

Inspired by the Buddhist concept of reincarnation and East Asian notions of the afterlife, the film is an adaptation of a 2012 novel by Japanese fantasy writer Naka Saijō. The directorial debut of Tommy Ng Kai Chung can be called a milestone in the history of Hong Kong animation, and at the same time the most profitable title in its history. Full of epic momentum, the story reaches for the local to tell about the universal experience of loss, while still showing the brutal sides of human nature. (Lucyna Szczykutowicz)
