Ding On is an orphan and works at a sword-making plant whose owner once adopted and raised him. When he accidentally learns the circumstances of his father's death, he decides to find the murderer - the cruel Flying Dragon. With this decision, he will set in motion events that will turn the world around him upside down. “Blade,” with a plot told from the perspective of Ling, the grown-up daughter of a plant owner, is a lesser-known Tsui Hark masterpiece, a remake of Chang Cheh's classic 1967 “One-Handed Swordsman.”

RETROSPECTIVE: TSUI HARK

Ding On is an orphan and works at a sword-making plant whose owner once adopted and raised him. When he accidentally learns the circumstances of his father's death, he decides to find the murderer - the cruel Flying Dragon. With this decision, he will set in motion events that will turn the world around him upside down. “Blade,” with a plot told from the perspective of Ling, the grown-up daughter of a plant owner, is a lesser-known Tsui Hark masterpiece, a remake of Chang Cheh's classic 1967 “One-Handed Swordsman.”

Crude and nihilistic, Tsuia's film is formally, however, very far removed from the stylized original, redefining the noble assumptions of the wxia genre. The action, drenched in sweat, blood and violence, was filmed in tight frames with a camera moving violently to the rhythm of furiously throbbing sounds. Tailored to the sensibilities of its time, “Blade” deeply cuts viewers' emotions two years before Hong Kong was handed over to China.
