The year 1967, on the eve of the zenith of the Vietnam War. Beneath the surface of the ground in a ruined village near Saigon lies a vast network of Củ Chi tunnels, where a small detachment of Viet Cong guerrillas operates. A secret intelligence group arrives at the underground base - the soldiers are ordered to protect it at all costs. As the unit becomes the main target of the American offensive, the protagonists — struggling with lack of light, drownings and recurring fears — face an unequal battle. In the narrow corridors, at the epicenter of the bombings, the guerrillas are fighting not only for their own survival - it is a story of sacrifice and an attempt to preserve human dignity in the face of the hell of war.

Made in the authentic outdoors of Củ Chi, using real military equipment left behind by American forces, Bùia Thạc Chuyên's film (“Drifting”, “Let It Burn”) is one of the most mature achievements of contemporary Vietnamese historical cinema. The director rejects simple propaganda schemes in favor of a realistic portrait of individuals placed in an extreme situation. Premiered in Vietnam on the occasion of the celebration of the circular anniversary of the end of the war, “The Sun in the Tunnel” in Europe received, among others, the Audience Award at the Udine Festival.
