NEW ASIAN CINEMA
The news of her father's death forces Nisay, a young theater actress from New York, to return to her native Cambodia. In Phnom Penh, a woman meets Thida again — her former love. The deep feeling comes alive again and, despite the passing of the years, it fills again all the areas of life that women once shared. A happily reborn relationship, however, is quickly confronted with mounting family problems and the pressure of social expectations. Suspended between the past and the present, “Whispers of the Moon” also blurs the line between fiction and reality, paradoxical form and moral drama.
Lai Yuqing's feature-length debut is an intimate romance, a moving portrait of a feeling struggling to survive in a world that has long since written them off at a loss. Premiered in Busan and awarded the Jury Prize at the Slamdance festival, the film tells the story of a young generation who constantly question their own choices and ask themselves: what if...? “Whispers of the Moon” is the first and last film by Lai, who tragically died at the age of 23, just a few months after its release.
