RETROSPECTIVE: NA HONG-JIN
Jung-ho is not a pleasant type — once a cop, today a pimp makes a living from the work of a group of girls. He just happens to be in a bad mood because two of them didn't come back after the last order — Jung-ho suspects that one of the customers resold them. Now she persuades sick Mi-jin to leave in hopes of leading him to the alleged dealer. She does not know that he is sending her to meet a monster in human skin. “In Pursuit”, however, is not another slapstick thriller about a psychopathic murderer, as there were many in Korea after the success of Bong Joon-ho's “Crime Riddle.”
-- [Color frame from the movie. A man dressed in a black shirt and black jacket stands pensive. Behind him are several men in white shirts, all looking in one place.]
The director masterfully enforces the rules of the genre and takes viewers on a nerve-wracking journey to the very bottom of hell. He does it ingeniously. Instead of car chases, he proposes to chase on foot through the winding streets of night Seoul, and weaves a satirical look at the workings of the Korean security apparatus into the terrifying plot. Inspired by real events, Na Hong-jin's pessimistic debut became the third most popular film of 2008 in Korea and a sensation among fans of the genre worldwide. Roger Ebert wrote that American creators should learn the craft on it. Attention! The film contains scenes of violent violence.
