RETROSPECTIVE: NA HONG-JIN
On the outskirts of Hope, in the Demilitarized Zone, a mysterious incident occurs — a torn cow is found. A policeman pursues the mystery to the city, while a group of hunters search for traces of the incident in the nearby forest. When they discover the cause of the confusion, they come face to face with something that existence will not be able to explain. “Welcome to Hope” is the most expensive film in the history of Korean cinema, for the premiere of which Na Hong-jin fans had to wait for as much as ten years.
-- [Color frame from the movie. A woman and a man are sitting in a police car. They look out the open window in one direction. You can see the horror on their faces.]
Produced with great pomp, the violent spectacle contains elements characteristic of Na cinema — the pursuit of evil, setting in the local context and the atmosphere of collective paranoia present in each frame. The Korean creator plays with the monster movie convention, combining it with a personal love for all-encompassing chaos. As a result, “Welcome to Hope” is a cinema galloping breathlessly, pulsating with rage, breaking records in terms of the number of curses, and at the same time perfectly conveying the energy of the fiery horse that patronizes this year's edition of Five Flavors.
