After receiving a mysterious postcard, Bai decides to visit a small town in Sichuan, from where it was sent. Located at the foot of the sacred Mount Emei, Luomu is the last place her ex-boyfriend Wang contacted her from before disappearing without a trace three years earlier. Bai stays at a local guesthouse, initially planning a stay of just a few days. However, it soon turns out that time in Luomu flows in a slow rhythm, and an attempt to unravel the mystery of Wang's disappearance leads her to confront her own past. During unhurried walks through the labyrinth of stone streets, Bai gradually gets to know the local residents, and also establishes a bond with the owner of the guesthouse, Liu.

The latest film by Korean-Chinese director Zhang Lü — enigmatic, melancholic and unobvious — can be described as a contemplative cinema. Its protagonists are stuck between waking and sleeping, the present and the memory. Luomu becomes a liminal space, where the past permeates the present, and the boundary between reality and imagination disappears. From the twilight, Zhang conjures up a portrait of a town tormented by ghosts. (Lucyna Szczykutowicz)
