What is a fidget? It is a small, repetitive movement of the body or a small object moved in the hand that helps regulate tension and attention. The hands are busy with something small, while the rest of the person tries to stay with the big thing that is happening right now. The fidget is also a loop: a movement that returns, although seemingly leads nowhere. From Freud, however, repetition does not mean simply recreating the past. Rather, it is the way in which the past acts in the present: it returns in gesture, tension, language, way of reacting. Sometimes, instead of remembering, we repeat. Sometimes, before we can speak in our own voice, we already speak the language of others.

The action of the show takes place somewhere between a podcast, an intimate conversation and an attempt to get in touch with what was written in us earlier than we could call it. Women of different ages who are on the spectrum of neurodiversity were invited to the trial. Their faces, voices, and family histories form the polyphony of what has been passed down through the years without diagnosis, instruction, or proper name. What exactly do we inherit? Temperament, manner of reaction, rhythm of speech, body tension, tendency to chaos? Or maybe also shame, family sayings and ways of dealing with everyday life? Together with these questions, mothers imperceptibly enter the conversation: as a memory, a similarity, a source of irritation and the first people with whom the nervous system learned the world.

The OFF Polska programme is aimed at supporting the production and exploitation of performances by offstage and independent theatres.
