Chie Hayakawa's film brings to mind the work of the specialist in family portraits of the Japanese Hirokazu Koreeda. Although it is maintained in a slightly more serious tone. “Renoir” is a moving reflection on the sensitivity and attempt of the young heroine to understand the adult world. At the same time, the story is based on the personal experience of the director, whose childhood was marked by the cancer disease of her father and his death.
Tokyo, 1987 year. Eleven-year-old Fuki Okida has to deal with her father's cancer and the absence of her ever-busy mother. Left to herself, the young heroine escapes into the world of imagination, where she feels much safer.
The girl is fascinated by hypnosis and telepathy. She has a very rich inner world, which distinguishes her from her peers. It also allows her to better cope with the difficult reality around her. The narration in the film has an episodic character, showing excerpts from Fuki's life. From walking around the city or visiting his father in the hospital on a regular basis, to school mishaps, to a risky meeting with a strange man. All this adds up to a subtle portrait of growing up, where innocence collides with the brutal honesty that characterizes the adult world.
