Virgil Oldman (Geoffrey Rush) is the owner of an auction house and an outstanding connoisseur of art. He did not associate himself with any woman, as he always devoted all his energy to his passion, to works of art. Few people have access to his hermetic world, sometimes only allowing Bill Whistler (Donald Sutherland), who shares his passion, and a young conservator of old mechanisms, Robert (Jim Sturgess). One day he receives a call from a mysterious woman, Claire Ibbetson (Sylvia Hoeks). She claims that she received a rich collection of works of art in inheritance from her deceased parents and would like Virgil to try to assess its value. This one arrives in an old mansion, filled with centuries-old paintings, sculptures, furniture. However, he does not meet the owner of the antiques, who only contacts him by phone.
