Oscar nominee Paul Giamatti as the disliked teacher, Paul. Paul is seen by students, teachers and the school principal as pompous and annoying.

Christmas in 1970 is approaching and Paul, having no family, does not go anywhere. The teacher stays at the school to keep an eye on the students who cannot go home. After a few days, only one student is left - a troublesome 15-year-old named Angus (Dominic Sessa), who faces expulsion for his fatal behavior. Paul and Angus are joined by cook Mary (Randolph), whose son was recently killed in Vietnam.

These three very different castaways form an unlikely Christmas family that shares comic vicissitudes during two very snowy weeks in New England. The real journey will turn out to be how they help each other understand that they are not attached to their past—they can choose their own future.
