Duration: 1.5 hours
hosted by: Nadia Wierzbicka
According to Georges Bataille, eroticism resembles the experience of death — in both cases, the line between us and the world around us is blurred. The philosopher defines this moment as a union with the totality of existence.
Bataille's thought will become for us an interpretive axis for the work of Alina Szapocznikow — a sculptor who in the 1960s created casts of her own body, combining them with everyday objects. When she was diagnosed with cancer at the end of her life, instead of hiding the disease, she decided to make it an art. The sculptures of Szapochnikov are a story about the disintegration of the body, in which pain and suffering are intertwined with erotic beauty.
During the workshop, we will get acquainted with fragments of Bataille's texts and consider how they resonate with the work of Szapocznikow. The meeting will take place in the workshop hall and at the exhibition Alina Szapocznikow/Naira Baghramian. Prior to the event, participants will receive text materials to the email address provided in the application.
