On the occasion of their ninth studio album, British indie folk trio Fink will take to the European countryside once again, landing at the Pump House on October 11.
With singer Fin Greenall in the lead, Fink, along with bandmates Tim Thornton and Guy Whittaker, bring their ninth studio album to the Pump House. After a career that started as a DJ and songwriter for Amy Winehouse, and which has since made Greenall the first singer-songwriter on legendary label Ninja Tune, the new material marks a shift towards a more authentic and down-to-earth sound inspired by south-west England's heritage.
The new album, The City Is Coming to Erase It All, is created with a deep respect for the album as a unified narrative. During recordings in Zennor, Cornwall, the band and Grammy-winning producer Sam Okell worked from a strict dogma: if an instrument or equipment didn't exist in 1974, it wasn't allowed to be used. Fin Greenall himself describes the result as “nowstalgia”, a sound that draws on the ethos of the past, but which speaks directly into the present with new stories and modern curiosity.
The album's central theme is the city's looming intrusion on the fragile tranquillity one finds in nature. It's the tale of how everyday worries and the noise of the big city can overshadow art and reality.
For Fink, touring life remains an inescapable necessity, even after decades on the biggest European stages. A parallel is drawn on the new album between the restless 18-year-old boys the band members once were and the mature family men they are today. Though they've played in any big city countless times, Greenall describes the desire to present new material as a force that trumps all comforts.
