Animal farm
A revolution is born on the stage. Animals take power. For a moment, everything seems possible.
Martha Streker (director) in Orwellian World is primarily interested in emotions and instincts that arise within the systems and mechanisms of power. They cannot be subdued, not even in the name of equality. The revolution sharpens the tension between what is human and what is animal. Power is rapidly degenerating. Instead of justice comes control and violence. The adaptation of Piotr Fronio — despite the reduction of some of the characters and plots — retains the multidimensionality of the Orwellian story.
It is also a story of individuals' reaction to change. The boxer (Edwin Petrykat) believes in ideals to the end — and loses. Clover (Teresa Sawicka) begins to notice the manipulation, but too late. Kwik (Krzysztof Brzazgoń) convinces that every decision of the authorities can be justified with properly chosen words. The old donkey Beniamin (Agata Obłąkowska-Mazurkiewicz) keeps his distance from the possibility of real change and does not trust any utopia. Napoleon (Anna Haba) gradually transforms the revolution into a system subordinated to the benefits of power and the subordination of others.
The theme of old age and wear and tear is particularly strong here. An important dimension of the performance is the extraordinary duo of worked horses, played by Edwin Petrykat and Teresa Sawicka, who returns to the stage of the Polish Theatre after more than six years.
The music and sounds by Maciej Zakrzewski build on the growing tension and co-create the disturbing rhythm of the world, which — like the carousel rotating on the stage — falls more and more quickly into an apparent and closed circle of repetitions.
The world keeps turning. It's just getting harder and harder to tell the face from the mouth.
