Fontaines D.C. — formed by Grian Chatten, Carlos O'Connell, Conor Curley, Conor Deegan and Tom Cole — will release their fifth album Dopamine Chamber (via XL Recordings) on October 16. Production is handled by James Ford.
The album is the successor to the 2024 album Romance, which went platinum in the UK. The new material clearly breaks away from the raw, guitar sound of the band's early career in favor of the most sensual and engaging compositions they have created to date.
The first single to promote the release is the song “Marianne”. The entire album combines powerful ballads with catchy, uplifting melodies that emerge from the dark atmosphere. The album addresses the topic of seeking pleasure in a world headed for crisis and asks what this search says about ourselves. As singer Grian Chatten concludes: “This album acts as the eponymous dopamine chamber. You go inside and we test songs on you that are supposed to change your mood and state of mind.”
Fontaines D.C. never record the same thing twice. For five albums, they have grown steadily — starting with Dogrel (2019) and A Hero's Death (2020), through the hit Skinty Fia (2022), which reached No. 1 on the UK and Ireland charts, to the crazy, multicolored Romance (2024).
Dopamine Chamber is their most daring and surprising change. The band recorded the album with producer James Ford in London, the English countryside and Palermo — where singer Grian Chatten sang in an improvised cabin made of pillows and mattresses.
As Chatten explains, “I have a strong feeling that we are on the threshold of a whole new stage — a new form of what it means to be human.”
On their fifth album, Fontaines D.C. created their own “chamber”. How it will affect the listener will be the main experiment.
Fontaines D.C. supports War Child UK. €1 from each ticket sold (after deducting applicable taxes) will help War Child protect, educate and defend the rights of children affected by war.
