Jean-Philippe Rameau in five suites included in the Pièces de clavecin en Concert series painted the outstanding personalities of his time, character traits and places. We have here the ideal of French Baroque chamber music, but also a gallery of miniature portraits or landscapes, not devoid of a sense of humor and sophisticated elegance.
In one of his works, Rameau portrays the master of viola da gamba music, Marina Marais, and it is a surprisingly serene portrait of this master of melancholic introversion. Suite en sol collects, according to convention, dances of a diverse nature, fully showing the phenomenon of an instrument forgotten by the later two centuries — the violi da gamba. The concert program is completed by sonatas by the founder of the French violin school Jean-Marie Leclair. In one of them we will find a wonderful duet of violin and viola, in the other — violin virtuosity in full glory.
