A perverse and meditative tale of Palestinians harvesting wild edible plants — 'akkoub and za'atar, whose harvesting is regulated by Israeli laws prohibiting harvesting, aimed at the ancient bond of the Palestinian people with their land. Legal restrictions prohibit the collection of wild 'akkoub — an artichoke-like plant — and za'atar (thyme), and breaking them has led to fines, fines and trials of hundreds of people caught harvesting these native plants. For Palestinians, these laws provide an ecological veil for regulations that further distance them from their own land, while representatives of the Israeli authorities cite their scientific knowledge and duty to protect nature. Following plants — from wildlife to cuisine, from chases between gatherers and conservation patrols to defense in court — “Foragers” shows the love, joy and knowledge of these traditions passed down from generation to generation, as well as the resistance of Palestinians to Israeli attempts to outlaw them — yet another form of persecution.
